A MAN has died after being struck by a train in Brockenhurst.

A 29-year-old man was hit by a South Western Railway train at Brockenhurst Station at around half-past five yesterday morning, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is being treated as non-suspicious, and caused all lines between Southampton and Bournemouth to be blocked.

The lines reopened just after 10am, with delays on routes until the mid-afternoon.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to Brockenhurst station at 5.34am this morning following a report a person had been struck by a train.

“Paramedics and colleagues from Hampshire Police also attended, but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are currently working to establish the identity of the person and the circumstances that led to their death.”

South Central Ambulance Service confirmed they had an ambulance and a Hazardous Area Response Team at the scene.

Passengers wishing to travel from Bournemouth and the New Forest towards London were advised to start their journey in Southampton or Eastleigh.

One passenger said: “All I know is when I arrived I was told there was a fatality at the level crossing.

“People like myself want to get to London and I have a business meeting at 12, but It’s understandable and my concerns and condolences go out to the relatives and family of whoever it is.”

Another passenger said: “I didn’t see anything, I just couldn’t get in the platform when I arrived.

“I’m supposed to go and pick up my daughter.

“These things happen unfortunately and from what I hear it’s serious so I wish the family well.”

Passengers were being taken by taxi to Southampton and Bournemouth, where they were able to catch other train routes.

A replacement bus service was also in operation.
