THOUSANDS of people flocked to a traditional country show held in the grounds of a stately home.

Staged by the Ellingham and Ringwood Agricultural Society, the Ellingham Show boasted a horse show, livestock competitions and a raft of attractions in the main arena.

The crowd is thought to have been smaller this year as a result of overcast skies.

Show secretary Tom Harvey said: “The attendance was ever so slightly down on last year, possibly because the risk of rain kept a few people away.

“I think we had just under 12,000 last year whereas the 2018 figure is likely to be nearer 11,000. But it was a very successful show with a really good atmosphere – there’s always a buzz on the showground.

“It’s a smaller, more traditional event than some of the other shows and has a unique flavour. A lot of visitors come back year after year.”

The one-day attraction is held in the grounds of Somerley House, Ringwood, owned by Lord Normanton.

Last year’s show raised more than £20,000 for charity and this year’s figure is likely to be higher, despite a dip in visitor numbers.

Mr Harvey said torrential rain during the build-up to last year's event resulted in costly alterations having to be made to the showground.
