ALTHOUGH it may not have been as glorious as this year, when the summer of 1993 came about, it brought with it some scorching temperatures.
The belated arrival of summer that year meant that grass and vegetation had matured so, when the blazing sunshine hit late in August, there was two group of people who were made particularly uncomfortable – asthmatics and hayfever sufferers.
The delayed seasonal glow also had an impact on accident-and-emergency units at hospitals – Southampton General saw an influx of people with sever sunburn, most of them adults who fell asleep in the sun.
