WE TAKE another glimpse back through time with the aid of still images - this week to September 1958.
On the first day of the month the first Cod War broke out between United Kingdom and Iceland. This was the beginning of a series of confrontations between the two countries over fishing rights in the North Atlantic. This wasn’t a conventional war - only one death was confirmed - and even that was accidental.
Storms hit Britain on September 5, disrupting communications and travel across the south-east. The largest hailstones ever recorded fell in Horsham, Sussex, as the storm wreaked havoc. The hailstone weighed 190g and measured 6.23cm in diameter. The record-breaking ball of ice was larger and heavier than a cricket ball.
It was a busy month in the world of midwifery with stars such as Bobby Davro, Linda Lusardi and Simon Mayo being brought into the world, as well as literary legend Irvine Welsh.
It was at a time when the average house price was £2,049, salaries were in the ballpark of £500 and a regular car cost £750.
