THE Daily Echo remembers life in Southampton in August 1988 – made easier by images from Echo photographers of the time.
It was a big month for football as Everton broke national records by signing Tony Cottee for £2.3 million from West Ham United.
Later that month Liverpool broke the same record by signing Ian Rush for £2.7 million from Juventus.
Scunthorpe United’s Glanford Park ground was opened – the first to have been built by a Football League Club since the 1950s. Their final game at Old Showground had been played on May 18.
The first child of The Duke and Duchess of York was born on August 8, at Portland Hospital in London. On August 29, she was named Beatrice Elizabeth Mary and was fifth in line to the throne until the birth of Prince George of Cambridge in 2013.
As well as Princess Beatrice’s birth, that month also saw that of boxer Tyson Fury, actor Rupert Grint and singer Alexandra Burke.
At 14 years old, Adam Sadler became Britain’s youngest international chess master on August 29.
Seven soldiers were killed by IRA bombs in Ireland – one in the Inglis Barracks bombing on August 1, and six near Belfast August 20.
