MORE than 100 families in Southampton opened their doors to welcome youngsters from all around the globe.

The International Youth Rally in July 1978, kicked-off with a civic reception and a dance at Southampton’s Guildhall.

Then there were trips to the New Forest, London, Bournemouth, Southsea and the Isle of Wight. The overseas guests also had their own international float in the Southampton Carnival that year, complete with flags and international costumes from the guests countries.

Highfield Church saw capacity crowds in its pews when more than 800 people flocked to the 32nd International Youth Rally service led by Rev John Williams.

The 100 foreign exchange students spent two weeks in Southampton after which 96 English youngsters, aged between 14 and 21, returned the visit.

Do you recognise any of the youngsters in these pictures? Did you and your family house them way back in 1978?
