Some of us use it merely as a way of getting from A to B, others see it as a pastime. It can be used as an element in a fitness plan, or utilised as a way to raise cash for a good cause.

More than 200 students congregated on Southampton Common in 1979 as they raised £1,280 by walking ten miles. The money boosted a £1.5m appeal for a body scanner for the General Hospital.

In 1988 a group of five Tesco workers began their epic £1m walk from John O’Groats to Lands End. They were raising money for Great Ormond Street Hospital.
