IN A dusty file hidden away in the Daily Echo archives were found pictures of Old Shirley football team.
Looking at the dates on the pictures, it’s clear they were operating for more than four decades at the very least.
They clearly had some success as a club, with one of the pictures showing them sitting among a bevy of trophies. The print states on the back that “Old Shirley, who had been trying to win the Premier Division title for 26 years finally did it in 1979.”
Another image shows their team captain, Brian Read, being presented with the AJ Miller trophy by Southampton Sunday League president Alf Miller in 1976.
