THE CABLEMEN were one of Eastleigh’s longest running and most popular football clubs.

Founded in 1916, Pirelli FC joined the Winchester & District League in 1923 before moving to the Eastleigh League and then the Southampton League.

The club entered the Hampshire League in 1933 – a time when they comprised six teams.

They came second that season, but were champions the following year, propelling themselves into Division 1.

Once the dust of the Second World War had settled and football resumed, Pirelli were put in Division 2 of the county league where they were regular FA Cup entrants.

It wasn’t until 1962 when Pirelli returned to top-flight football after winning the Division 2 title.

In 1965 the club moved to their home in Chestnut Avenue, becoming league champions in 1972 and 1992.

Pirelli remained in the Hampshire League, despite the company moving out of Eastleigh.

They continued until they lost their ground in 2003, at which point they had no option than to fold.
