FILM festivals have been part of Southampton for decades, furnishing eager viewers with a myriad of movie-based entertainment.

Many cinemas across the city, both old and new, have played host to events, including Odeon, ABC, MGM and Harbour Lights.

Southampton Film Week is being held from November 11 to 19, and includes a variety of events for Southampton film enthusiasts - some of which hark back to the early days of the silver screen.

On November 12, a screening of Buster Keaton’s 1928 silent classic The Cameraman will be shown at 02 Guildhall.

The film will be accompanied by a live theatre organ, giving those in the audience a taste of what picture houses were like in the days before “talkies”.

The Mayflower Theatre will be the venue for a screening of Walt Disney’s animated reimagining of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on November 19.

It won’t be the first time the theatre has hosted the 1937 classic - it was screened upon the movie’s original UK release, way back when the theatre was known as The Empire.

Excited children of the time queued up round the block with their parents, all eager to see the monumental movie in all its colourful glory.

Susan Beckett of City Eye, organisers of Southampton Film Week told the Daily Echo: For City Eye and Southampton Film Week this opportunity to collaborate with Mayflower on a screening event, particularly given its heritage theme is exciting. “It’s wonderful to be celebrating the theatre’s history and reminding people about its place in the lives of Southampton people across the generations.”

The Mayflower will be giving people the opportunity to celebrate and learn more about the theatre’s history as a cinema, providing the means to look through a series of their archive materials. Patrons are also encouraged to dress up as their favourite Disney characters.
